Citygate Network supports the efforts of 300-plus city missions in North America, many of which have been providing life-saving services and spiritual direction for poor and powerless people for more than a century. In Washington State, there’s a law that requires houses of worship and other religious nonprofits to employ even those who contradict the beliefs the nonprofits were created to foster, unless a position qualifies for the Washington Supreme Court’s narrow interpretation of a “minister.”
Citygate Network believes that is a dangerous law for all faith-based organization, whether Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc. Now that law is being challenged by Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission with a case that the U.S. Supreme Court has been asked to take—and encouraged to do so by 17 states.
