The Department of Homeland Security has requested department volunteers who can pitch in to help with preparation for a potential mass migration to the U.S.-Mexico border when a pandemic emergency rule from the previous administration comes to an end. The public health order known as Title 42, effective since March 2020, has allowed border authorities to turn away migrants in keeping with COVID-19 protocols. However, officials have begun discussions to terminate that order, and predict that about 170,000 people could swarm to the U.S. border when that happens. The Department of Homeland Security has created a Southwest Border Coordination Center to manage the process across multiple agencies.
