California Governor to Decide Legality of Psychedelics

Lawmakers in the “golden state” recently approved a bill that would decriminalize the possession and personal use of a number of psychedelics. Senate Bill 58 passed by a 43-15 vote in the state assembly and a 21-14 vote in the state senate, moving it along to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk to decide whether it will become law. Approval would mean no criminal penalties for possession or use of psilocybin and psilocin. The bill does acknowledge that possession of the psychedelics on school property or by anyone under 21 would qualify for penalties. California Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher brought strong opposition to the proposed legislation, stating concerns about how this legalization would impact an already skyrocketing problem with crime and homelessness throughout California. The governor has until October 14 to either approve or veto the bill, which would not go into effect until 2025 if passed.
