Airport Serving as Shelter for Influx of Migrants

Chicago leaders have felt the public backlash from a summer decision to house more than 400 migrants in a section of O'Hare International Airport. Although homeless Americans can no longer stay at the airport, the city has struggled to house the influx of approximately 14,000 migrants bused into the city over the last months, so officials set up an out-of-sight section of a terminal for this purpose. The security and background checks that Americans go through at airports do not apply to the migrants staying in the facility. The Biden administration has identified 11 other airports as potential housing sites for the 60,000 migrants that have recently arrived in New York City seeking asylum, including Atlantic City International Airport. Within the last week, Atlantic City officials have expressed adamant opposition to the federal proposal to use the South Jersey airport as a shelter for these migrants and have appealed to the state governor to help them fight it.
