Trends in Higher Education Changing

With the rising cost of obtaining a college education, more young people have begun exploring trade schools to gain marketable skills. “As economic and employment conditions change across the country, many are beginning to see the trades and other skilled labor as a viable route to prosperity that does not require financing tens of thousands of dollars in student debt,” said Gregg Vincent, a technical school principal.

From 2021 to 2022, trade schools saw enrollment go up in two-year skilled trade programs, including mechanic and repair, culinary courses, and construction trades. Meanwhile, public community colleges saw a drop in enrollment. Another principal explained that a trade school education allows students to obtain skills in areas they feel passionately about while earning credentials in a shorter period of time, allowing them to make a living wage and get benefits without having to go into such significant debt. According to Vincent, “A college degree is a wonderful investment if you know you want to be a teacher, doctor or lawyer. However, a young person who knows they want to be a plumber or chef is probably much better served by entering a program which will provide this training as it will funnel them directly into their chosen career path.”
