Citygate Network Missions Respond with Courage Amidst Hurricane Helene’s Devastation

September 30, 2024—Colorado Springs, CO - As Hurricane Helene tore through the Southeast, its powerful winds and torrential rain left behind a path of destruction that has severely impacted several Citygate Network member missions and ministries. What began as a normal day of serving those in need quickly turned into a struggle for survival as many woke up to widespread flooding, road closures, power outages, and water shortages.

Michael Woods, CEO of Western Carolina Rescue Mission in Asheville, North Carolina, shared a sobering account of the challenges they’re facing. "We’re doing okay, but it’s tough. Last night, we had to evacuate my oldest son and his family because of the threat of a major dam breaking. There’s no power or water, and gas stations are overrun with people. Our mission has minor damage, but our biggest concern is for the people we serve—imagine 140 individuals without showers, noon-flushable toilets, and with limited access to drinking water."

Other missions are experiencing similar struggles. Gigi Williams, CEO of Safe Harbor in Hickory, North Carolina, recounted, "The devastation all around us is so very real. But our staff is incredible! Despite having no power in two of our buildings, we managed to host a cook-out to lift everyone’s spirits, and you could see our guests relaxing after days of horrific stress."

Meanwhile, Ryan Duerk, CEO of Miracle Hill Ministries in Greenville, South Carolina, described unprecedented destruction: "I’ve never seen this level of damage away from the coast. Eighty-five percent of our facilities are without power, and cell service is spotty at best. We’re serving our guests and have also become a severe weather shelter for anyone impacted by the hurricane."

With the damage mounting, the needs are enormous. Staff members are working tirelessly to keep their communities safe and provide essential services, even as their own homes and lives are affected. Citygate Network has stepped in to support these ministries, contacting mission leaders to assess needs and coordinate relief efforts.

    1. Safety for our member missions and ministries, and for their staff in the affected areas, as well as for the people they serve.
    2. Unity for the communities severely impacted by this disaster, and strength and resources to respond and recover.
    3. Protection for the workers trying to restore power, clear trees and debris, and provide disaster relief.
    4. Guidance for ministry leaders to focus on the important things and help broken, struggling people see Jesus in the midst of all the tragedy.
