Budget category: More than $5 million PHOTOGRAPHYFirst place: Untitled Seattle's Union Gospel Mission Judge's comments: As I worked at narrowing down the candidates in this budget category, this portrait made me stop and want to know her story. The black background and colorless decisions were key. Without the distracting color and distracting background, the contrast draws the viewers attention to this woman's unfiltered emotion with amazing detail. I was so captivated by her face that it took me a moment to see the tear, which only drew me in more; therefore, I gave this portrait the award of excellence.

The composition of this photograph takes me directly to his eyes which show an unmistakable joy despite his age, capturing this simple moment in time. Ultimately this image generally has the affect of "I want whatever he's got;" so, I naturally gave Robbert the Award of Excellence.
